A former regional leader of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-ML) was shot dead in Jessore on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 53 son of Amarat Biswas of Madhupur village under Rafiq upazila. He was accused in the murder case of Prakash Kumar Saha, former chairman of Haridaskati union of the upazila.
The incident took place at around 2pm on the east side of Diganga Kuchalia Secondary School in Monirampur Upazila.
According to local sources, Rafiqul left the banned party and returned to normal life.
Before his death, he used to make a living by riding an easy bike.
According to police he was returning to Manirampur taking passengers at Sundali Bazar on Thursday afternoon. On reaching the empty space next to Diganga-Kuchalia Secondary School on the way, the miscreants shot and hacked him to death, leaving his body and easy bike.
Pranab Kumar Biswas, a UP member from Kuchlia area, said on hearing the gunshots, people in the area came forward and shouted when they saw Rafiq’s body lying on the ground. The victim had two bullet marks on the right side of his chest and right arm and a sharp weapon wound on his neck. Manirampur police recovered the body from the spot.
Sikder Matiar Rahman, Officer-In-Charge (OC-investigation) of Manirampur police station told that it was not yet known who publicly shot and killed Rafiq. There are several cases in the name of the deceased Rafiq.
