Police early today (Saturday) arrested a Jubo League leader and three of his associates for vandalizing sculpture of revolutionary Bagha Jatin at Kaya College in Kushtoa’s Kumarkhali upazila on Friday night.
According to the police, the sculpture of Bagha Jatin was attacked over a rift between the college principal and the president of the college governing body due to several causes including unwanted interference college affairs by the president and irregularities on a recent recruitment at the college.
“ A third party intended to be capture the college governing boy post vandalised the bust of Jatin to take advantage of situation,” said Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Tanvir Arafath said this at a press conference at his on Saturday (December 19) afternoon.
SP said the three have been arrested in a case filed by college principal Harun ur Rashid on Friday under special power act.
The arrested are Anichur Rahman (35), Sabuj Hossain (20) and Hridoy Ahmed (20).
Anisur Rahman is president of Kaya Union unit Juba League.
They were arrested during raids in different areas on Friday (December 16) night.
The SP said there was another fugitive named Bachchu accused in the incident.
SP said, “What I have extracted so far in the investigation and of primary interrogation is that the incident took place due to internal conflict in the college.”
“There is a conflict between Kaya College President Advocate Nizamul Haque Chunnu and Principal Haru ur Rashid. The college night guard witnessed the incident with his own eyes. The vandals took position there around 11 pm to chat each other. Later, at around 1:15 am, Anis hit three places with a hammer. Later they all left the place on a motorcycle.”
The SP said the four were directly involved. Three of them have been arrested. The rest will be brought to book soon and handed over to the court.
A member of the governing body of the college said on condition of anonymity that a number of teachers were appointed in the college last year. There are allegations that the president transacted money in the appointment. Besides, President Nizamul Haque Chunnu is involved in Awami politics. He was interfering in various activities of the college for no reason. Nizamul has been the president of the colleges for about 5 years.
Juba League president Anis's house is in Raydanga village next to the college. Here, Anis had been lobbying for a long time to become the president of that college.
The SP said, "I don't want to say directly, because the police will take remand the accused and interrogate them.” However, due to several issues, a group choose a crazy way to make it much hot.
Meanwhile, leaders of the district Jatayiatabadi Samtantrik Dal (JSD) staged a protest rally and human chain Kumarkhali upazila over the vandalism of the sculpture of revolutionary Bagha Jatin at Kaya College.
On December 4, at around 2 am, miscreants similarly vandalized the sculpture of Bangabandhu with a hammer. Police later collected CCTV footage. The next day, (December 5), police arrested two students of the madrasa and their two teachers. They are now languishing in jail.
