It has been expressed that relations between Bangladesh and India will be advanced on matters of mutual interest, with a promise of further improvement and continuity in the historic ties between the two nations.

A meeting took place between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladesh’s Interim Government Foreign Affairs Advisor, Md. Touhid Hossain, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting occurred on Monday evening (September 23) local time in the United States. On Tuesday morning (September 24), Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain met with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during the United Nations General Assembly session, where they discussed issues of mutual interest.

After the mass student uprising on August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and moved to India, leading to political changes in Bangladesh. In this context, there had been some tensions in the relations between Bangladesh and India. However, this was the first direct meeting between high-level representatives of the two countries, and it is seen as a positive step towards improving bilateral relations.
