A Narail court sentenced BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman to two years jail in a defamation case filed for insulting Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In the same case, he was also fined Tk 10,000 and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for non-payment.
Judge Amatul Morsheda of Narail Judicial Magistrate Court-2 handed down the verdict at 11:30 am on Thursday.
On December 16, 2014, Tarique Rahman made an offensive speech about Bangabandhu at a rally organized by the BNP at the Antrim Bank Wait Hall in East London. That news was published in a national daily of the country.
A freedom fighter of Narail Shahajan Biswas was outraged by the news and filed a defamation suit at Narail Judicial Magistrate Court-2 alleging that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had been dishonored.
