Bhabna Khatun married to her favorite Sohail just 15 days ago. She came to her house holding her husband’s hand. She didn’t know if she would get married without the consent of her husband’s family.

After the marriage, Bhabna found out that her mother-in-law Jharna Khatun did not like her. So the mother-in-law’s oppression started from the day of her marriage. Every day quarrels, quarrels like matter, insulting words surround her. In the end, like her mother, her husband Sohail also started behaving hostilely. Twenty-three years old Bhabna finally took the path of suicide seeing no way back.

The incident took place on Monday (October 27) at Thakurdaulatpur village in Bahadurpur union of Kushtia’s Bheramara upazila.

Shah Jalal, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bheramara Police Station, said Bhabna’s husband Sohail and mother-in-law Jharna Khatun were taken into police custody immediately after the incident. After questioning all night, it is known that Bhabna committed suicide.

However, behind the suicide of Bhabana was the continuous victim of her husband Sohail and mother-in-law Jharna. She was persuaded to commit suicide. Police arrested Sohail and Jharna Khatun in a suicide incitement case on Tuesday morning.

SI Jahangir Hossain, in-charge of Bahadurpur police camp, told the Kushtia Times that  Sohail, son of Mahibul Islam of Thakur Daulatpur village in Kushtia’s Bheramara upazila, had a love affair with Nazrul Islam’s daughter Bhabna Khatun on Facebook. Bhabna’s father is a grocer by profession.

At one stage of their love, they decided to go out of the family and get married. They got married secretly on October 11. Sohail brings her to his house.

As there was no one like Sohail’s family in the marriage, Bhaban was separated from Sohal and kept in a room. At the same time there are various mental tortures on the Bhabna. The police officer found out that she was not allowed to eat and take a bath properly. Even though Bhabna’s family members came to Sohail’s house, they were chased away.

SI Jahangir Hossain said Bhabna’s family members also stopped communicating with her at one stage. On the other hand, her husband Sohail also expressed to Bhabna at one stage that it is not possible to have a family with her.

“It may seem like the only way to end her life is to think,” said the police officer.

He said Bhabna has been keeping the door closed since Monday afternoon. As there was no response from the house, around 7:30 pm, a torch light was thrown through the gap in the fence and Bhabna’s body was seen hanging with a fan. She committed suicide with his veil.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital.

No one from Bhabna’s family could be reached for comment.

OC Shah Jalal said Bhabna’s husband Sohail and mother-in-law Jharna Khatun would be taken to court.
