The remand prayer for Daily Prothom Alo senior correspondent Rozina Islam has been rejected. However, the court sent her to jail. The bail hearing will be held next Thursday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim passed the order after a hearing on Tuesday (May 18th).
Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Arifur Rahman Sardar, who was seeking a five-day remand, produced her in court on Tuesday morning in a case filed under the Bangladesh Penal Code and Official Secrets Act.
A case was filed against Rozina Islam at Shahbagh Police Station on Monday night (May 17). The case was filed on the basis of the allegations of the Ministry of Health, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health Services Md. Shibbir Ahmed Usmani.
Journalist Rozina Islam was brought to Shahbagh police station around 9:pm on Monday after being detained illegally at the Secretariat for a long time. The health ministry has accused her of taking pictures of important government documents on his mobile phone without permission and hiding some other documents.
Regarding the torture and case of journalist Rozina, Farida Yasmin, President of the National Press Club, said, “Rozina Islam has international recognition for investigative journalism. Harassing such a journalist is unjust, unwelcome. The reason for her detention needs to be investigated.
