The nation has paid tribute to those heroes who received death on 21st February 1952 for the mother tongue Bangla. This day is anointed as Martyr's Day and International Mother Language Day. Since morning, thousands of people from different classes and professions marched to the Shaheed Minar to pay respect to language martyrs from all over the country. Various political, social, cultural organizations, educational institutions, government and private institutions are seen to pay their respects at the minar.
The day was also observed with due respect in Kushtia. Various programmes were organized in the district towns and upazilas for a few days. Language martyrs have been honored by various arrangements in government, private institutions and educational institutions. Discussions and book fairs have been organized across the district till the last day of this month.
In the early hours of Wednesday, the district administration auspiciously decorated the Shaheed Minar, located at collectorate premises, with flowers. The district administration led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ehtesham Reza placed wreaths at the martyr's altar. In the morning, a long line of people irrespective of ages are seen to pay tribute. Barefoot, wearing black chest badges, carrying banners and garlands, they can be seen walking slowly towards the Shaheed Minar. Common people proceed towards Shaheed Minar by rally.
On this occasion, he organized a day's book fair in the district administration area as the District Commissioner.
Since the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized the International Mother Language Day as a tribute to the great Ekush, the day has been celebrated at the international level for more than two decades.
