A writ petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the inactivity of mobile phone companies due to weak network of mobile phones and slow internet. The writ has sought guidance to provide internationally recognized high speed internet service in the interest of the customers.
Mohiuddin Ahmed, president of the Mobile Phone Consumers Association in the public interest, and a member of the Law Reporters Forum, a journalist and Supreme Court lawyer Md. Advocate Ishrat Hasan filed the writ petition on behalf of Rashidul Hasan On Tuesday (January 12).
The information, communication and technology secretary, the chairman of BTRC and the chief executives of the mobile network companies have been sued.The writ petition said that mobile phone subscribers are suffering due to weak network and slow internet. The quality of service is disappointing compared to the amount charged from the customer. Although the number of mobile phone and internet users increased rapidly, the mobile phone companies did not provide services accordingly. As a result, customers are suffering.
According to a 2020 survey, Bangladesh is at the bottom of the list of countries that ensure the quality of digital services.
Advocate Ishrat Hasan, lawyer of the petitioners, said the country’s internet speed is so weak that people in many parts of the country are being deprived of internet services.Earlier, on November 26, a legal notice was sent to take appropriate action to ensure quality network system by resolving the problem of weak mobile phone network and slow internet. The lawyer said that the writ was filed as no action was taken in this regard even after receiving the notice.
