The name of Information Ministry has been 'Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
A notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Monday (March 15th) said that the President had amended the Rules of Business, 1996 to give the name to the Ministry of Information as per the powers conferred on Article 55 (6) of the Constitution of Bangladesh. At the same time the notification has been published in the form of Gazette.
According to the Ministry of Information, there is no full reflection of the name of the Ministry of Information. In addition to information, the scope of work of the Ministry of Information covers a large part of the functions related to electronic and print media. So the initiative was taken to add the word 'broadcast' in the name.
On March 1, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud told reporters that the name of the Information Ministry after independence was 'Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.'
Now an offer has been made to go back to that name again.
He said, 'This ministry looks after the issue of broadcasting. Now there is the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Information Technology, what is being done in it, various complications are being created. The letter from one ministry is going to another ministry.
Earlier the issue of broadcasting was limited, now the issue of broadcasting is widespread.
Broadcasting in various ways including television-radio-online. That is why the initiative has been taken to change the name.
The names and terms of reference of the Ministries are mentioned in the Rules of Business. It is formulated by the Cabinet Division. Therefore, the proposal to change the name of the ministry was sent from the Ministry of Information to the Cabinet Division.
A summary from the Cabinet Division was sent to the Prime Minister for approval. After the approval of the Prime Minister, a notification has been issued to change the name.
