Today is 14 December. This day of the month of the great liberation war of 1971 in Bangladesh is another day of irreparable loss to the Bengali nation.
In the first hours of this day, the occupying nefarious Pakistani forces and their local allies, the Jamaat-Shibir, Al-Badar forces, killed the freedom-seeking intellectuals of Bengal. Among them were writers, scientists, singers, teachers, researchers, journalists, politicians, lawyers, doctors, engineers, architects, sculptors, public and private officials, people associated with films and dramas, philanthropists and cultural workers.
This horrible incident happened when the nine month war was almost over. Pakistan's defeat was certain. On that day, through this murder, they indulged in a terrible conspiracy to demoralize a newly originated independent nation.
From December 10, 1971, preparations for the killing of intellectuals went on. Basically, the plan was implemented on 14 December. On this day, at least 200 intellectuals were taken away from their homes. They were blindfolded and taken to torture centers located in different places including Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Nakhalpara, Rajarbagh. Terrible torture was carried out on them there. Later they were brutally killed and left in Rayerbazar and Mirpur slaughterhouses.
14th December is observed as 'Martyr Intellectuals Day' every year in memory of the intellectuals.
Every year the President and the Prime Minister give separate messages on the occasion of the day. Besides, the President and the Prime Minister paid their respects at the Mirpur Martyr Intellectuals Memorial.
Along with the government, various political, social and cultural organizations also hold various programs on Martyred Intellectuals Day.
