At least 7 people were shot dead in police firing and countless numbers of unknown people were injured in Kushtia in the last moments of the fall of the government of Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
This casualty occurred when the police opened fire on the attack on the Kushtia Model Police Station and the office of the Superintendent of Police on Monday afternoon. Eyewitnesses said that around, at the firstmovement, police dispersed the Anti-discrimination protesters by firing severalrounds of teargas and blank bullets at Majampur gate at about 12.30:pm.
After 1 pm, another part of the agitators attacked the Kushtia Model Police Station.The police initially fired tear gas and bullets but failed to disperse the protesters. Later they started firing at the protesters. The town shook with the sound of police firing, tear gas shells. However, even in such a situation,the agitators did not retreat. On receiving the information, the army personnel came and rescued all the policemen of the Model Police Station and took them toa safe place. Then, the agitators set fire to a residential building inside the police station. All the furniture and emergency records inside the police station were burnt. Besides, 8-10 motorcycles in front of the building were burnt. The fire service came and brought the fire under control.
Meanwhile, another group of agitators barged into the Kushtia police line after 2 pm. They started throwing brickbats. Police fired tear gas cells and shotguns to bring the situation under control. Manypeople were shot. When they were taken to Kushtia General Hospital, the doctors declared 6 dead. Among the deceased are Yusuf Ali (70) and Lokman’sson Abdullah (13) of Thanapara area of the city, Babu (40) son of Nowsher Aliand Ashraf (42) son of Kafiluddin of Haripur area of Sadar Upazila. The namesof the rest are not known. Going to the hospital, it was seen that the wounded were crying for blood. The air of the hospital was heavy with the cries of relatives of the victims.
Meanwhile, just after 2:pm, thousands of people descended on Kushtia town and started cheering. Many hugged each other. Somealso distribute sweets after hearing the news of the falling Hasina government.  On the other hand, after the news of the fall of Sheikh Hasina government spread, the protesters attacked and vandalized the house of Awami League Joint Secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif, District Awami League General Secretary Asgar Ali, Town Awami League President Taizal AliKhan, Swachha Sevak League General Secretary also a drug seller Manab Chaki,along with Kushtia 2 Constituency MP Kamarul Arefin, different affiliated organizations of Awami League. Some shops of Awami supporters were looted. Eyewitnesses said that some items were also looted from the unguarded Model Police Station in the evening. Besides, there have been reports of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s murals and sculptures being demolished in various places in Kushtia city. People were cheering all over thecity until this report was made at 9:30 pm. Apart from this, there have been reports of vandalism and vandalism of Bangabandhu’s statue in various places of the six upazilas of the district.
