Sugarcane crashing of Kushtia Sugar Mill was declared stopped due to huge losses.

The crashing for the 2020-2021 season was supposed to start on December 25. But an official notification has been issued on Wednesday morning announcing to stop this season’s sugarcane crashing.

Rakibur Rahman Khan, managing director of Kushtia Sugar Mill said that not only Kushtia mills but also 6 mills have been shut down. The sugarcane from Kushtia will be given to Darshana, Mobarakganj and Faridpur sugar mills.

Meanwhile, the workers here have not received their salaries for the last 6 months. Sugarcane farmers also do not get their long overdue money around 12 crore taka.

In all, the mill has incurred a loss of Tk 461 crore in the last 19 years. The mill has unsold sugar worth Tk 21 crore and chitagur worth Tk 5 crore produced by the mill.

The construction work of this industry started in 1961 at a place called Jagati, only 8 km away from Kushtia district town. It started sugar production from 1965-66 season.

After independence, in 1972, the government of Bangladesh declared this institution as a state institution. This profitable company has been facing losses since 2001. After that the amount of loss increases every year. The workers were continuing their agitation fearing that the mill might close.
