An editor of a local daily also correspondent of a television channel received severe broken injuries in his hands, legs and chest when a group of criminals made attacks on him at Haripur in Kushtia sadar upazila on Wednesday evening.
Severely injured journalist is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka trauma Centre.
The journalist was Hasibur Rahman Riju, editor of Kushtia’s local daily Satyakhabar and Kushtia Correspondent of satellite television channel Asian TV.
He was hailed of Haripur village.
Local sources and witnesses said, Rizu was approaching to Kushtia town after meeting held on 120 year celebration of ‘The old Kushtia High School’ of the village. Rizu was joint of convener of the event organising committee.
A group of criminals led by Shipon, Murad and Rajan stopped Rizu’s motorbike when he reached near to Haripur bazar at about 6.30:pm.
Shipon is joint convener of Kushtia Sadar upazila Jatyiatabadi Jubo Dal also convener of a fraction committee of Haripur union unit of Jubo Dal.
Shipon went on altercation with Rizu on various local issue as well as his journalism against drugs of Haripur area.
At one stage, Shipon and his men attacked Rizu with Iron rods and sharp knives. They beat up on various parts of his body and stabbed indiscriminately.
The attackers fled the spot when local people reached the spot.
Later the locals rescued the journalist and sent him to Kushtia General Hospital. From there he was sent to Dhaka Trauma Centre on the night.
Resident Medical Officer of Kushtia General Hospital Dr. Tapas Kumar Sarkar told that Riju’s two legs and wrist was broken. Fingers of both hands, chest and head were seriously injured in stabs.
Trophy Biswas, wife of the journalist told that two operations meanwhile have been done on Rizu. He was admitted there.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station Sheikh Sohail Rana told that those involved in the attack have been identified.
Police are raiding to arrest them.
