A court has sentenced six Awami League leaders and activists to life term imprisonment in murdering of another AL activist over election violence in Alampur Union of Kushtia Sadar Upazila in 2016.
Aktaruzzman Biswas, the current chairman of the same UP and former general secretary of Kushtia Sadar Upazila Awami League, is among the convicted defendants.
Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge Tajul Islam gave the verdict on Thursday (November 10).
Those sentenced to life are - Akhtaruzzaman Biswas 53, his brother Habil Uddin Biswas, 49, Bablu Biswas 46, Mahmudul Hasan Sabuj, 22, Rashedul Islam Bidyut, 33 and Masud Gain (38) of the same village.
Four convicts were present in the court when the verdict was announced. Masud Gain and Bidyut are absconding.
The court also has sentenced three people to 5 years rigorous imprisonment in the case. Along with that, they have been fined 10,000 taka, in default of payment they have been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment.
On the morning of April 28, 2016, a clash between Awami League candidate and rebel candidate took place in Dahkula village of Alampur Union Masud Karim was killed.
Masud Karim is a local fish farmer and supporter of independent candidate former Awami League leader Siraj Uddin Sheikh. His house is in Dahkula village of the UP. At least 15 people from both sides were injured in the clash and 15 people were arrested in this incident.
The victim's younger brother Mahbubul Karim Mollah filed a case against 21 people in the Kushtia Model Police Station, making Awami League candidate Akhtaruzzaman the main accused in the murder incident.
