Police arrested Sheikh Jamirul Islam, the mastermind also key accused in the case filed in connection with the death of Ulfat Ara Tinni, a Kushtia Islamic University student who was reportedly suicide on October 1.
Police said he was arrested from the bus stand area of Magura town on Wednesday morning. Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police Muntasirul Islam said this at a press briefing at noon. Police so far arrested five people in the case. Eight people were accused in the case filed by Tinni's mother Halima Begum. The three accused are still absconding.
Ulfat Ara Tinni is the daughter of freedom fighter Yusuf Ali of Sheikhpara Bazar in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah. On the night of October 1, Tinni was rescued by family members on hanging from the ceiling fan of her house.
The rape case was first filed in this incident. Later medical tests showed no signs of rape. Kushtia General Hospital RMO Tapas Kumar Sarkar said Tinni had committed suicide. The autopsy report was handed over to Kushtia Moedl police station.
The family claims that Tinni has chosen to commit suicide out of shame and anger after being raped. Tinni was a student of 2012-13 academic year.
There was considerable suspicion of the death whether it is murder or suicide, after the issue of the misbehave Tinni’s former brother-in-law Jamirul come up. It is believed that Tinni committed suicide after being tortured by Jamirul.
Tinni’s cousin Makhleshur Rahman said that Tinni’s elder sister Minni was married to Jamirul, son of Punuruddin of the same village. But the marriage was dissolved as there was no understanding between Minni and Jamirul. But after a while, Jamirul started to get Minni back. For this reason, Jamirul was putting pressure on Tinni’s family in various ways.
Due to this, Jamirul engaged in altercation with coming to Tinni’s house on Thursday evening and vandalized it at one stage. Later around 10 pm, Jamirul along with 15/20 other people attacked Tinni’s house. At that time, university student Tinni was studying in her room on the second floor of the house. At that time Jamirul went to her room with the people and locked the door from inside and beat Tinni severely.
At one point Jamirul left with his men. Ten minutes later, Tinni’s mother and sister went to the second floor of the house and saw Tinni’s hanging body. Later, people in the area came to the police with their screams.
Tinni’s mother Halima Begum alleged that Tinni was threatened by Jamirul Islam on her way home from Kushtia on the evening of the incident. She said he would hurt her.
Halima Begum claims that Tinni was killed in a planned way after being brutally tortured.
