A husband escaped swiftly leaving his wife’s burnt body dead at the hospital bed in Meherpur.
The deceased was identified as Rubina Khatun, 20. She is the daughter of Rabgul Hossain of Tengarmath village in Meherpur Sadar upazila. She has a two-year-old daughter.
Family of the dead woman alleged that Rubina was burned to death after being tortured to demand dowry.
According to Rubina's father’s family, Rubina was married to Milon Hossain of the neighboring Manoharpur village four years ago. Milon works as a field worker at a local NGO. He lived in a rented house in Bamandi Bazar area of Gangni upazila of Meherpur.
Gangni Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Obaidur Rahman quoted Shamima Akhter Rita, wife of the owner of Milon’s rented house, as saying that the couple often had quarrels over various issues.
A quarrel again between Milon and Rubina began on Thursday (October 15) evening. At around 9: pm, Rubina poured kerosene on her body and set herself on fire. At the screams of her husband Milon, the people of the neighborhood, including the family of the house owner, went and put out the fire in Rubina’s body.
Rubina rescued and admitted to a local clinic. After initial treatment, she was shifted to Meherpur General Hospital. She died there on Friday morning.
Milon and his family member’s runaway to the hospital after receiving the news of Rubina’s death.
OC Obaidur Rahman said police had been sent to search for Milon. The matter either is murder or suicide is being investigated. No case was filed.
