High Court upheld death of 10 convicted to kill Sheikh Hasina

The High Court has upheld the death sentence of 10 convicted of attempting to assassinate Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by planting bomb at Kotalipara in Gopalganj in 2000.

A bench comprised with Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Badruzzaman pronounced the verdict on Wednesday (February 18).

The accused are Wasim Akhtar, Rashed Driver alias Abul Kalam, Yusuf alias Abu Musa Harun, Sheikh Farid alias Maulana Shawkat Osman, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badr, Maulana Abu Bakkar, Hafez Maulana Yahya, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hai Orf Omar.

Mehdi Hasan alias Abdul Wadud is also serving a life sentence. The other three accused Anisul alias Anis, who was sentenced to 14 years in court, said.

Mahibullah alias Mofizur Rahman and Sarwar Hossain Miah were acquitted by the High Court as they were not involved in the case.

According to case, on August 20, 2016, Judge Mumtaz Begum of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 sentenced 10 militants to death in the case.

After the appeal of the accused, all the documents including the verdict of the case were sent to the High Court on August 24 of that year.

On July 20, 2000, a 6 kg bomb was planted near the rally of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Kotalipara in Gopalganj to assassinate her.
