A former police sub-inspector (CSI) has been sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling government money.

Kushtia District and Sessions Judge Special Court Judge Ashraful Islam announced the verdict in the presence of the convict on Monday afternoon.

Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Mujahid Islam Mithu said Mostafa Hawlader was working as a court sub-inspector (CSI) in 2010 at the Kushtia Judicial Magistrate Court’s Malkhana. While serving in the court in Kushtia, he embezzled Tk. 60,000 by reducing the amount of treasury invoice by digit.

A case was filed against him in 2010 and he was first suspended and later sent to compulsory retirement.

Advocate Mujahid Islam Mithu said that after settling the two cases, he collected a fine of Tk 43,000 and Tk 20,200 from the parties. But he deposited Tk 3,000 instead of Tk 43,000 and Tk 200 instead of Tk 20,200.

A copy of the treasury invoice was rubbed and Tk 43 thousand was shown as Tk 3000 and tk 20 thousand 200 hundred as tk 200. When the matter was later found to be under investigation, the court ordered the Superintendent of Police to investigate and take action.

Mostafa Hawladar was suspended after the police investigation found the initial truth of embezzlement.

Later in 2010 he appealed to the administrative tribunal but the appeal was dismissed and he was sent on compulsory retirement.

ACC lawyer Al Mujahid Islam Mithu said that when the matter came to the notice of the court, the court ordered the ACC to file a case with investigation. Sahar Ali, deputy assistant director of the district office of the anti-corruption commission, filed a case with the Kushtia Sadar police station after the ACC found the allegations to be true. After investigating the case, the ACC filed a charge sheet in 2011.

The court convicted him under two sections of the Anti-Corruption Act. The court also fined the convict tk 60,000. Non-payment has been punished for 4 more months. The two sentences will be effective in succession; So he has to be imprisoned for three years, said lawyer Mujahid Islam.

However, another accused in the case, Inspector of Police Qayem Uddin, has been acquitted.
The accused Mostafa Hawladar’s house is in Bhola district.
