Five people including four of a family were killed in a tragic road accident in Kushtia this afternoon (Tuesday).
The accident took place when an ambulance met a head-on collision with a truck at Bittipara on the Kushtia-Khulna highway at about 3.30:pm.
All the dead were passengers of the ambulance.
The deceased were identified as Mofiz Uddin, 57, his wife Arbi Khatun, 45, their son Mohammad Ifat, 27, Mofiz’s brother-in-law Mohammad Ali and ambulance driver Tipu Sultan, 38.
Mofiz’s another brother-in-law Mohammad Insan Ali who received severe injury from the incident now undergoing treatment at Kushtia medical college hospital.
Mofiz was hailed at Doratan road of Jashore district town and driver Tipu was of Lohagar of Narail district.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP-Kushtia Sadar Circle) Atiqul Islam quoting the relatives of the victims and said Mofiz’s wife Arbi lost her mental balance two years ago. She was admitted to Pabna Mental hospital in last year.
After around one of treatment Arbi was recovered.
Mofiz with his whole family and two brothers of his wife Arbi Khatun went to Pabna to receive Arbi. They rented an ambulance from Jashore.
The ASP said the ambulance started journey from Pabna at about 2:pm and was returning to Jashore.
The police official said the ambulance met the head on collision with a speedy truck of BADC (Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation) of Kushtia. The truck, laden with fertilizer was coming from Jashore.
The front side of the ambulance totally got destroyed. All five were killed on the spot.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Islamic University Police Station Mostafizur Rahman said police is trying to arrest the truck driver who is absconding since the incident.
