Among the 12 assassins of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the remaining five are still absconding. Six of them have been executed so far. And one died of natural causes while remaining hidden in Zimbabwe. The government is trying to bring those five people back to the country. But there is no noticeable progress.
In the meantime, 47 years have passed since the crucial murder. The murder trial of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, ended 13 years ago. The location of two of the fugitives was known, but the whereabouts of the other three could not be confirmed. However, law enforcement forces say that these three are travelling continuously from and to different countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa. The current government, led by Sheikh Hasina, has managed to execute the accused Abdul Majed who was sentenced to death. Abdul Majed fled the country for a long time. He was hanged on April 12, 2020. They are Syed Faruque Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Mohammad Bazlul Huda, Mohiuddin Ahmed, and AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed. On the other hand, Aziz Pasha died in Zimbabwe while managing his disappearance. Among the last murderers of Bangabandhu, Abdul Majed was hanged. He was arrested on the night of April 7, 2019, in Mirpur, the capital. Five days later, on April 12, his execution took effect. He managed to flee to India for a long time.
Among the remaining five murderers, Rashed Chowdhury is staying in the United States. And Noor Chowdhury is in Canada. The government is not succeeding in trying to bring them back. Different countries' own laws against the death penalty have become obstacles in this regard. Meanwhile, there is no trace of Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haque Dalim, and Muslim Uddin. The government has no reliable information about their whereabouts. However, there is an Interpol warrant for their arrest. However, media reports have said that Khandaker Abdur Rashid is sometimes in Pakistan and sometimes in Libya. And Shariful Haque Dalim is in Pakistan. Still, it cannot be said that these data are completely certain.
The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was martyred on the night of August 15, 1975, in building number 32 of Dhanmondi by the brutal assassins' bullets. Assassins killed not only Bangabandhu, his partner Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib and his three sons, who were brave freedom fighters, Captain Sheikh Kamal and brave freedom fighter Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal. They even slaughtered 10-year-old son Sheikh Russell, daughter-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rozi Jamal, the only brother, freedom fighter Sheikh Abu Nasser and many others. The then military government rehabilitated the confessed killers of this murder abroad with jobs in the embassy.
Finally, on November 8, 1998, Dhaka Sessions Judge Kazi Golam Rasul announced the death sentences of 15 accused after the trial. However, three were acquitted by the appeal verdict. The remaining 12 were sentenced to death.
Finally, the Appellate Division announced the final verdict on January 27, 2010. When the request for reconsideration of the review made by the defendants was rejected, the nation saw the execution of five murderers, out of many, who brutally ended the lives of their nation’s father, and other significant figures.
