Department of Narcotics Control in Kushtia has discovered a cannabis garden in Bheramara upazila in the district today (July 23).
The cannabis was being cultivated at a fallow 3 katha land of the railway department near Lalon Shah Bridge quite neatly. Acting on a tip off, the narcotics department conducted the raid there. There were total of 55 matured cannabis plants.
One person was arrested at the time.
The detainee was identified as is Rakib, 16. He was hailed at Sholdag area of Bheramara upazila town.
Shirin Akhter, assistant director of the Narcotics Control Department, said the operation was carried out on a tip-off. She said cannabis cultivation had been going on here for a long time.
According to a source in the department, cannabis is valued in Kushtia. That is why cannabis is also cultivated in this area.
However, she told that the detainee was just a guard. There are more people behind it. Citing the arrested Rakib, Shirin Akhter said cannabis was cultivated in the same way last year.
She said police had been asked to look into the matter.
Bheramara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sohel Maruf also went to the spot. He said a total of 55 cannabis plants were found there. These have been destroyed.
Belal Hossain, an inspector of the Narcotics Control Department, has filed a case with Bheramara Police Station.
Officer-in-charge of Bheramara Police Station Shahjalal said an investigation has been started into the matter.
