The dead body of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) teacher Professor Dr. Selim Hossain was exhumed from grave at Banshgram village in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia on Wednesday morning in presence of a magistrate.
Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Kumarkhali police station in Kushtia confirmed the matter.
Mohammad Saidul Islam, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kushtia said he received a letter from Khulna DC Moniruzzaman Talukder on Tuesday afternoon to take necessary steps for exhuming the body. But it was not possible as it was about to evening. Then decision was taken to exhume the body in the morning.
He appointed an magistrate in this regard.
Executive magistrate Ahmed Sadat exhumed the body and handed over to a police team of Khanjahan Ali Police Station in Khulna.
According to the university source, on December 5, Registrar In-Charge Anisur Rahman referring the death of Professor Selim Hossain as an unusual, he sent a letter to the district police requesting for thoroughly investigation on behalf of the university.
Later, Inspector (Investigation) of Khulna Khanjahan Ali Police Station Shahriar Hasan applied to the Khulna District Magistrate. After processing the matter, court ordered to exhume the body.
Selim Hossain, 38, died on November 30 in a rented house that was next to the campus. He was also the Provost of Lalon Shah Hall of the university. Without any autopsy, his body was buried in Kushtia on December 1.
According to source, a group Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists confined Professor Selim to his room in the department and subjected him to mental torture. It is alleged that he died due to mental harassment of some leaders and activists of Chhatra League.
Only a general diary was filed at Khan Jahan Ali police station in this incident. No case was filed till now.
Selim’s wife Sabina Khatun said she has been living in extreme insecurity. She wants the university authority to file case and she has informed the university authority through the teachers’ association.
Sabina said such an unnatural death happened at the university, why not the university would have responsibility to file a case.
Professor Selim’s father Shukur Ali reacted angrily to how the university authorities had sent the body for burial without any autopsy after such of a death.
He thinks, somehow, his son was pushed to death. He demands proper investigation.
