The body of a housewife was exhumed from the grave for autopsy 26 days after burial in Kushtia.
The woman, identified as Shila Khatun, 32, is the wife of Asad Munshi alias Ujjal of Adabaria village in Bagulat union of Kumarkhali upazila in the district.
Police said the body was exhumed following a complaint by Shila’s brother Abbas Ali. Shila’s body was buried without any autopsy. Shila died on 19 April.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Piyush Kanti Karmakar of Kumarkhali Police Station said that after Shila’s death on April 19, her husband’s family sources claimed that Shila had committed suicide by hanging herself. She was buried on April 20 at the graveyard adjacent to Banshgram Bazar as her relatives had no objection.
The police official said Abbas lodged a complaint with the police station seven days after the body was buried (April 25). He claimed that Shila had been beaten to death. It is alleged that Shila’s husband Ujjal used to torture her regularly in demanding dowry. As evidence, Abbas submitted some recorded mobile conversations between Ujjal and him.
When the complaint was raised by the Kushtia Judicial Magistrate Court, the court directed the police station to take up the matter and directed the district magistrate to take necessary action.
On May 4, a case was filed with Kumarkhali police station. The district magistrate ordered the exhumation on May 17.
Police recovered the body from the graveyard in the presence of Bani Amin, an executive magistrate of Kushtia district administrtaion at noon on Monday (May 17) and sent it to the Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Abbas, the elder brother of the deceased and the plaintiff in the case, said that his sister got married to Ujjal 14 years ago. Since the marriage, he has been torturing his sister physically and mentally for dowry money and job to army. They killed Shila without getting dowry money.
