A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader stabbed twice to a journalist over a minor incident in Chuadanga. Police said they have arrested the BCL leader.
The injured journalist was identified as Sohel Rana Dalim (38). He is Staff correspondent of local daily Somoyer Somikaran and Chuadanga correspondent Dhaka based Amader Natun Somoy.
The incident took place in the Emergency Road area in Chuadanga town around 10 pm on Monday.
Police and witnesses said Dalim was going to the newspaper office on the city’s Emergency Road on his motorcycle. At the time, a motorcycle in front of him came to a sudden stop and two motorcycles collided. Raju Ahmed, former student affairs secretary of the district BCL, was on the front motorbike.
After the incident, Raju and 7/8 other BCL activists on other motorbikes surrounded journalist Dalim. The BCL leader snatched the key of Dalim’s motorbike and punched him hard. At one point, he was branded an anti-government journalist and stabbed in the back with a razor from behind. The blood-wonded journalist Dalim left his motorbike and ran to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital to save his life. The unruly Chhatra League cadres started chasing him. When Dalim reached the emergency of the hospital and sought medical treatment, the cadres caught him there and stabbed him in the chest and back again.
Upon receiving the information, police went to the hospital and brought the situation under control.
Sohel Rana Dalim, undergoing treatment at the hospital, said BCL leader Raju was telling him that there was no harm to the country if a journalist like him was killed.
Sadar Hospital’s physician Shakil Arsalan told that Dalim sustained with deep wounds in his back, chest and hands. He also had a lot of bleeding.
He is being treated at the hospital. However, he is not fully out of danger.
Chuadanga Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Jihad Fakrul Alam said Raju Ahmed was arrested after the incident. Police are conducting operations to nab those involved in the attack.
A case is being filed in this regard. However, he did not want to say anything about where The BCL leader was detained.
Meanwhile, Sardar Al Amin, president of Chuadanga Press Club, Nazmul Haque Swapan, editor-in-chief of Daily Somoyer Samikaran, Obaidur Rahman Chowdhury Jipu, former mayor of Chuadanga Municipality and convener of the District Sechchasebak League and Pfizer Chowdhury former general secretary of Chuadanga Press Club condemned incident.
