A group of villagers launched an attack on a Baul worship in Kushtia’s Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia on Saturday night leaving 8 Bauls injured on the spot.
The injured Bauls are being undergoing treatment at Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex.
The incident took place in Laubaria village of the upazila around 8:30 pm,
Although a complaint was filed at Daulatpur Police Station, none of the attackers were arrested.
According to sources, Lalon devotee Palan Mandal of Laubaria village organized a two-day event of baul worship at his home on Saturday night. He arranges it as regular event in every year. Baul, Sadhus, Lalan devotees and followers from different places join this.
An injured Baul did not disclose their names said at around 8.30pm , a group of villagers led by Azad, Babul, Rafi, Masum, Chalamat, Ziar Ali, Mosharf Hossain, Bashir, Saiful, Sumon, Ariful Islam and 10-12 others equipped with native weapons attacked the saints.
Baul Majeda Fakirani said that the attackers beat the saints indiscriminately with sharp weapons and sticks.
But the Bauls did not protest.
when Palan Mandal who organized the Sadhusang went to stop the miscreants, he was severely beaten. The worship was got closed.
When the attackers left the scene, the injured the Baul Sadhus were admitted to the Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex.
The injured includes Palan Mandal (37), Palash Mandal (30), Pravin Sadhu Fazal Fakir (70), Majeda Fakirani (50) and Akalima Khatun (40) at least 8 Baul, Sadhu,
In this incident, Baul Palan Mandal filed a general dairy with Daulatpur police station on Sunday afternoon. However, no one was detained or arrested, the complainants said.
Anis Uddin Sarkar of the village said that the people of the area are not angry with the work of the Baulds where the event is held here every year. But due to the HSC examination, the people of the area did not take the matter well this time.
Palan Mondal told that keeping the exam in mind, this time they were doing sadhusang without any loudspeaker. He said that they were forced to organize sadhusang considering the moon.
Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station Mojibur Rahman told that because of the HSC examination, the neighbors went to the Sadhusang and asked them to stop the music. At one stage of the argument between the them, the attack took place.
He said the police have received the complaint. Legal action will be taken after investigation.
Kushtia Superintendent of Police Khairul Alam on Sunday night told to the daily star that the culprits will be caught. The police are working.
