The divorce level in Bangladesh doubled in 2022 compared to the previous year, as revealed in the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) report titled Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics (BSVS) 2022.
The report's launch took place on Tuesday at the BBS building, which is in Agargaon, Dhaka. Planning Minister, who is MA Mannan was present there as the chief guest at the occasion.
In 2022, the number of girls getting married under the age of 15 ascended to 6.5%, from 4.7% in 2021, 4.9 per cent in 2020, 6.2 per cent in 2019 and 4.6 per cent in 2018. Similarly, the rate of girls getting married under the age of 18 accelerated from 32.4% in the previous year to 40.9% in the same period of time.
In 2022, the rates were 42.9 per cent in rural and 34.9 per cent in urban areas. They were 33.8 per cent and 28.2 per cent in 2021 respectively.
As for divorces, the report states that the divorce rate per 1,000 individuals rushed from 0.7% in 2021 to 1.4% in 2022. It was 0.7 in 2021, 0.8 in 2020, 1 in 2019, and 0.9 in 2018. It signifies a notable transformation in recent years.
