Kushtia Police have claimed success in the incident about 12 hours after the under-construction sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was damaged at the intersection of Kushtia city.
A Kushtia police source said three people have been arrested in the incident. However, another source said that 1 person was actually arrested in the incident. The district police superintendent SM Tanvir Arafath can give a briefing on the matter, the source said.
Meanwhile, the tension in this incident has now spread beyond Kushtia to home and abroad. Protests and condemnations of this incident continue in different parts of the world. Condemnation is going on through various social media.
In Kushtia also various political organizations, socio-cultural organizations have protested; They have announced various programmes.
The miscreants hit the sculpture under construction of Bangabandhu at the intersection of Panch Rasta in Kushtia city on early Saturday. The right hand of the sculpture breaks up to the elbow and distorts the face with hammer.
The police superintendent said on Saturday afternoon that those involved have already been identified. They will be brought under book soon.
Kushtia Municipality Executive Engineer Rabiul Islam said the construction of three sculptures of Bangabandhu on the same pillar started at the place on October 12. There will be three sculptures side by side. The whole pillar will be at the junction of five roads.
Below the sculpture, portraits will also be of four national leaders. It will be built with the own funds of Kushtia Municipality. It has cost about tk 35 lakh.
Meanwhile, in the evening, two rounds of blank shots were fired at the spot where the sculpture of Bangabandhu was smashed. The incident took place around 7:30 pm.
Police a group of criminals came on a numberless micro bus crossing the Kushite municipality. A micro collided head with rickshaw just in front of the Bangbandhu sculpture.
After the incident, an excited young man in a black jacket came out of the micro and raised his pistol and fired two rounds. Police were deployed within 20 yards.
The police were silent at first. Later, as soon as police SI Raju Ahmed went there, the gunman got into the micro and quickly turned the micro towards Majampur.
