Kushtia District and Sessions Judge’s Court on Sunday denied bail to two accused in the case of vandalism of Bangabandhu sculpture in Kushtia.
The sculpture of Bangabandhu under construction at the intersection of Panch Rasta More in Kushtia city was vandalized around 2 am on December 4 last year. Two Qawmi madrasa students broke and damaged the face and parts of the hands of the sculpture. The incident took place last year when various Islamist organizations including Hefazat Islam, a communal group were carrying out anti-sculpture movement in Bangladesh.
The CCTV camera was near the sculpture. After reviewing that footage and other CCTV footage in the vicinity, the police quickly arrested the culprits.
The arrestes included two students of Ibn Masood Qawmi Madrasa of Jugia Madar Shah Paschim Para in Kushtia outskirts. The students are Abu Bakkar alias Mithun, Md. Sabuj Islam alias Nahid, teachers Al-Amin and Yusuf Ali.
Kushtia Municipality Secretary Md Kamal Uddin lodged a complaint under the Special Powers Act with Kushtia Model Police Station.
