A Kushtia court has issued arrest warrants against four officials of Sun Life Insurance in a case filed against them for embezzling customer’s deposit.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rezaul Karim issued the order of arrest warrant on Thursday.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Advocate Joydev Biswas said the case lodged when a number of female customers of Khoksa Upazila in Kushtia were cheated on their deposits.
He said Anjuara Khatun, a resident of Khoksa Upazila, a victim of fraud by Sun Life Insurance Co. filed the case in the Kushtia Chief Judicial Magistrate Amli Court on January 5, 2020.
AKM Shariful Islam, central managing director of Sun Life Insurance Co. and three officials of Kushtia including Md. Oli Ullah, Anisur Rahman and Asma Khatun Bailey were accused in the case.
However, Oli Ullah and Anisur Rahman, two officials of the insurance company, claimed that they did not know anything about the case.
According to the case, in early 2008, Anjuara Khatun, wife of Farid Mollah, a resident of Moragachha village in Khoksa upazila, became attracted to Sun Life Insurance and became a 10-year insurance depositor and encouraged several other neighbours to become insurance depositors.
Anjuara Khatun applied for withdrawal of their respective deposits in 2018 in the prescribed process subject to the payment of the deposit from the beginning to the desired time as per the conditions. But the concerned officials of the insurance company continue to waste time by showing various excuses. At one point, officials fired her threatening and intimidating that the money would not be returned.
The judge of the concerned court, after taking cognizance of the case, summoned the suspects to the court more than once and summoned them for their explanation. But they did avoid the court order.
In this context, the plaintiff in the case filed a petition in the court seeking issuance of arrest warrant against the people of the insurance company and to recover the claimed Tk 12.5 lakh attached to the document.
“I do not work there now and I do not know if there is a case against me,” said Md Oli Ullah of Sun Life Insurance Co. Ganabima project branch in Kushtia. However, while talking to another official Anisur Rahman, he said, “Look, we have many projects; I can’t even say at this moment that I will be able to find out which project’s claimants have filed this case.
Sources said that such allegations against this company are not new in Kushtia. Another lawyer, Siraj Pramanik, said several cases were pending in several Kushtia courts.
