An activist of Awami League (AL) was killed in a clash between two groups of the ruling party at Sandiyara village in Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia today (Monday).
The deceased was identified as Billah Sheikh, son of Mofazzal of the same village. Hundreds also have been injured in the clash, took place around 10 am on Monday.
Locals said Samiul Alam Sumon, general secretary of Panti Union unit of Awami League and Mamun Sheikh, an influential leader of the Awami League in the same area, were at loggerheads over establishment political influence in the area.
Clashes broke out after two people of both sides engaged in brawl at Sandiyara Bazar in the morning.
Both sides used firearms and indigenous weapons during the hour’s long clash.
Billah Sheikh was shot dead on the spot by his opponents. Billah is known to be Mamun Sheikh’s man.
Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Kumarkhali Police Station Mojibur Rahman said after receiving information, the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The body of the deceased was recovered and sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.
Seven of the injured are admitted to Kumarkhali Upazila Health complex while the other injured are taking treatment at different hospitals in adjacent Jhenidah district.
Additional police have been deployed in the area, OC said.
