A Citi Bank agent was shot dead in Gangni upazila of Meherpur on Thursday. Police said the killers were muggers. The incident took place to snatch Tk 46 lakh from the deceased.
The deceased was identified as Khademul Islam, 35, son of Minarul Islam of Jatarpur village in Meherpur.
The incident took place at 11am on Thursday (August 28) in Khoksa of Garadob Union in Gangni Upazila.
Quoting Khademul’s younger brother Ijazul Islam Jhantu, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gangni Police Station (investigation) Sajedul Islam said Khademul was going to the bank booth located at Gangni Upazila town on a motorcycle alone with Tk 46 lakh in a bag from home in the morning.
The snatchers blocked his way at Khoksa on the Gangni-Garadob road and attempted to snatch the bag with money. Sensing the situation, Khademul shouted for help, the people in the adjacent location responded to Khademul’s screams and rushed towards the spot.
The robbers shot Khademul from behind.
The OC said Khademul, who was shot in the back, left the motorcycle with the bag of money and ran through roadside field. The robbers fled the scene on two motorcycles when some people arrived on the spot.
Locals rescued Khademul and admitted him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex. Police recovered the money.
He was referred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital as his condition sustained to be critical. On reaching Kushtia, he succumbed in Khalisakundi area of Kushtia.
OC Sajedul Islam said it was initially suspect that he had been shot for snatching money.
He said an operation was underway to nab the killers.
