A human chain was held in Kushtia’s Mirpur upazila in demanding punishment of brutal torture to a housewife that caused her death. People including relatives and local people took part in the human chain and raised their voice.
They demanded immediate step against the husband and mother-in-law of the slain housewife.
The deceased was identified as Tasmim Akhter Mim. She was the only daughter of Mahibul Alam, office assistant of Kamirhat Secondary School in Mirpur upazila of the district.
The human chain was held in front of Mim’s coffin at 10:30 am on Wednesday at Kachuadah village in the upazila. The human chain demanded the execution of Mim’s husband Ejaz Ahmed Bappi and mother-in-law Kohinoor Begum as Mim’s killers.

Mim’s mother Tajma Khatun said Mim was married to Ejaz Ahmed Bappi, son of late Jinnah Mollah of Taragunia area of Daulatpur in Kushtia, four years ago. Although dowry was given as much as possible according to the demands of the family during the marriage, but after a while Bappi and his mother used to torture Mim. Their demand was for more cash.
Tajma said Bappi demanded a motorcycle on September 2. When Mim protested, torture came down on her. It is learned that at around 4 pm on that day, Bappi and his mother Kahinur Begum mercilessly beat up Mim. At one point, Mim’s condition worsened. Then the mother and son hung Mim with the fan in the room and closed the door. Hearing Mim’s scream, the people next to the door rushed and broke down the door and entered. Upon entering, they found Kahinur and her husband Bappi. When asked about the incident, they said Mim was trying to commit suicide. But the answer to why the door was locked from the inside and what they were doing did not match.
Mim’s mother alleged that Bappi and his family took Mim to Kushtia General Hospital without informing them. Later, after receiving information from the neighbors, Mim’s relatives found her in critical condition at Kushtia General Hospital. The next day, her condition deteriorated and she was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
After 13 days of fighting to the death in the ICU, Mim died at 4 am on Tuesday.
Mim’s family has lodged a complaint with the Daulatpur police station but the police have not taken up the case yet.
Daulatpur Police Station OC Zahurul Alam said he joined the police station yesterday. He is looking into the matter.
