The government is planning to import rice when required to keep the local market stable and to curb the heinous design of the rice mill owners and preventing price manipulation by reducing the import duty.
Paddy has a bumper production this year and farmers are getting fair prices, a handout from the food ministry yesterday.
And even after that, if the rice market is volatile and millers deny their transactions and delay the supply of rice to government warehouses, the government will import rice by reducing import duties if necessary, the handout added.
