At least 104 prisoners fled from Kushtia District Jail. The incident took place after 2 pm on Wednesday.
Several rounds of firing took place over the incident, but no casualty was reported. A team of army personnel currently stationed in Kushtia is in the area adjacent to the jail.
According to the eyewitnesses, they heard a sudden noise at about 2:pm. They found 4 to 5 or more prisoners were coming out of the jail. All were on a swift run. Some of them are wearing jail clothes, some were with normal. Everyone had their faces covered with towels or something like that.
A person named Matiur Rahman laltu, who lives on PTI road in Kushtia town said that he saw some prisoners running away on motorcycles covering their faces with handkerchiefs.
Hearing the news, army personnel came there and fired blanks. Currently, the situation is under control, it is said by the prison authorities.
Although no jail official made any comment, some sources in the jail said that the bail date of some of the accused who are in jail was today. When the jail authorities were taking out the bailed prisoners by roll-call, several prisoners in the jail came out simultaneously and the escaped.
At that time, the authorities could not say how many prisoners got escaped. It is estimated that 104 people escaped. Investigating is going on.
Kushtia Deputy Commissioner (DC) also head of the inspection team of district jail Ehtesham Reza said that all measures will be taken to check whether there is any negligence.
