Kushtia/Councilor beat up teacher, case against four, 1 held

A case has been filed against four people including municipality councilor Sohel Rana alias Asha of Kushtia for their involvement in beating a school headmaster in broad daylight. Police arrested one of the accused.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station Sabbirul Alam on Friday night confirmed the recoding of case and arrest.
Earlier, the victim headmaster filed the case on same day.
According to school sources, the municipality has been constructing road next to Lahini Secondary School adjacent to Kushtia-Rajbari Highway. The councilor Asha has left bricks, sand and pickets on the school ground taking several days. But the work has not been completed for almost a year.
At the same time, the councilor was forced to take away water from the pipes of the school and was using the school’s electricity for construction work during classes at the school.
As a result, the students were facing extreme difficulties including disruption in the class.
Headmaster Nazrul Islam said he had asked councilor Asha to take away materials as soon as possible and not to use school’s water and electricity. The councilor was angry at this.
He entered the school office room with some men at around 10 am and scolded the teacher for obstructing government development work. At one stage, he beat up the headmaster and vandalized office furniture.
Seeing their teacher being harassed, the students immediately erupted into protest. They left the school and took up position on the Kushtia-Rajbari highway. They protested and demanded arrest of the councilor and his henchmen.
At one stage, local people of the area also joined the students.
Police rushed to the spot and took away the students from the highway cleared.
Teacher Nazrul Islam said he filed the case after instruction of the his higher authority.
OC Sabbirul said police has arrested Tasher Ali, one of the accused in the case from his home on Friday afternoon.
Matiar Rahman Majnu, president of the school’s managing committee also the current panel Mayor of Kushtia municipality said councilor Asha did misdeed. He cannot do it.
He said the councilor did not even need to inform him about these matters.
The Kushtia Times tried to reach the accused councilor Asha, but his phone was found switched off.
