A housewife attempted to commit suicide by hanging after police members allegedly physically assaulted her and mother-in-law in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila yesterday.
Meherima Islam Sneha, wife of Zihad Ali, is now undergoing treatment at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.
Lying on the hospital bed, Sneha told journalists that she married Zihad in Dhaka in July last year in presence of her mother and since then, she has been staying at her in-law’s house.
A team of police led by Sub-inspector Rajib Ahmed arrived there yesterday evening after her grandmother several days ago lodged complaint with Damurhuda Police Station that Sneha was confined there.
Sneha alleged that a female and a male police member suddenly started assaulting them before they could sense anything.
“A police personnel grabbed the hair of her mother-in-law Sohana Begum and beat her to the ground. As I resisted when they tried to take me away, they also slapped me and kicked me,” she alleged.
As neighbours arrived there, police personnel took position out of the room when Sneha attempted to hang herself, locking the door from inside. Police members and neighbours then rescued her and took to the hospital, said Sneha’s husband Zihad.
He said his wife was brought up at her grandmother’s house. She made the complaint as she was against their marriage.
“Whatever the allegations are…Why did the police beat up my mother and wife?” he asked.
Mostafizur Rahman, a doctor of the hospital, said Sneha was kept under observation.
Ferdous Wahid, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Police Station said police went to the house to rescue the girl upon receiving a complaint that the girl is underage.
The family members obstructed the police’s work, the OC said and denied any incident of beating.
Munna Biswas, assistant superintendent (Damurhuda circle) of district police, said “we primarily came to know that a female constable beat them up. Investigation is going on.”
