A nurse cut off finger of a newborn while cutting the bandage.

The incident took place at Kushtia unit of Ad-Din private hospital at 6 am today (Friday) at 6 am.

The baby’s father’s name is Rafiqul Islam. He is hailed of Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah. He worked in Bangladesh railways.

Rafiqul said he admitted his pregnant wife Ritu to Ad-Din Hospital on Tuesday. Ritu gave birth a daughter through surgery that night. However, the baby was sick after birth. Canola was applied to the child’s right hand for treatment.

The canola was covered with bandage.

At around 6 am on Friday, nurse Mumtaz Parveen went to the hospital to open the canola from the baby’s hand. She cut off a finger of the child while cutting the bandage.

At this time, to stop the baby’s continuous crying, the nurse quickly bandaged and covered him with the severed finger.

When the matter came to light, the relatives of the patient started making various allegations against the hospital authority.

Rafiqul said the hospital authorities initially assured them that the baby would be taken to Dhaka by helicopter. But it was only hope as they failed to bring in helicopter till after noon.

At one stage in the afternoon, the hospital authorities arranged for the child to be sent to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital by ambulance.

The baby’s father Rafiqul Islam said the baby was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital today.

He alleged that the authorities harassed them in various ways throughout the day with various excuses.

Kushtia manager of Ad-Din Hospital Rabiul Awal admitted the fact of the incident.

He said the incident happened was very sad.

The incident happened inadvertently. He said the child has been sent to Dhaka for better treatment. Ad-Din Hospital authorities will bear the medical expenses there.
