The joint general secretary of ruling Bangladesh Awami League Mahbub ul Alam Hanif termed the Hasina’s home coming of 7 May was significant for Bangladesh. In a Face Book post from Kushtia Hanif says it.
Hanif wrote: Today is the day for the day of restoration of democracy in the country. During the state of emergency declared by the then caretaker government on May 7, 2007, Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangbandhu returned to Bangladesh from the United States to restore democracy by overcoming hundreds of obstacles.
This is a memorable day for the people who love democracy in Bangladesh. At that time, the then caretaker government issued an immediate ban on Awami League President Sheikh Hasna so that she could not come back to Bangladesh. However, Hasina did not pay any heed on the imposing ban on her.
There was a worldwide storm of protests against the clamp down. The caretaker government was compelled to lift the ban under the pressure of the democracy-lover people and tenacity of Shiekh Hasina and her courage. When Bangabandhu’s daughter returned to Dhaka on 7 May, millions of people greeted her warmly. They brought her to the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban with a street march from Dhaka Airport.
Hasina was arrested on July 16, 2007 in a plotted case against Hasina and was in custody until her release on June 11, 2008. After being released on parole, she went out to the country for treatment and at the end, she returned to her country on 4 December.
The democracy was restored in Bangladesh in the midst of massive agitation and struggle under the courageous and far-sighted leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
This home coming of Sheikh Hasina is a significant event in the history of Bangladesh for the democratic movement-struggle and development-progress and prosperity in Bangladesh.
