Three accused of vandalism Bagha jatin’s statue taken police remand

Police have remanded three accused in a case of vandalism the statue of revolutionary Bagha Jatin in Kushtia. The way was cleared when the review application made by their lawyer rejected in the high court.

A bench of the high court on Monday (March 22) dismissed the review application. On the same evening, they were brought to Kumarkhali police station from Kushtia district jail.

Kumarkhali Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mojibar Rahman confirmed the matter and told that they were being interrogated.

On the night of December 17, 2020, miscreants vandalised the sculpture of Bagha Jatin, a pioneer of the anti-British movement, in front of Kaya College in Kaya village of Kumarkhali upazila of the district. Kushtia Model Police and Kumarkhali Police jointly arrested Anisul Haque, president of Kaya Union Juba League, on December 19 on the basis of secret information. According to his confession, police arrested Hridoy Ahmed and Sabuj Hossain next day.

The OC said Inspector Rakib Hasan, the investigating officer (IO) of the case, had applied for a seven-day remand on December 19. On December 20, judge of Kushtia Chief Judicial Magistrate Selina Khatun granted a three-day remand to the accused. Defendant upheld the remand granted by the District Judge Magistrate’s Court on the same day when the remand order was revised in the District Sessions Judge’s Court. On December 21, lawyers of the accused applied for review in the High Court.
