The district administration has formed a one-member probe body into the incident of assault on two journalists at the district social service office in Meherpur.
Additional District Magistrate Tushar Kumar Pal has been assigned to investigate the incident.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Munsur Alam Khan formed the committee on Sunday (November 7) evening after discussions with the district’s journalist leaders.
President of Meherpur Press Club Fazlul Haque Montu, Advisor Tuhin Aranya, Former President Ruhul Quddush Tito, General Secretary Alamin Hossain, President of Meherpur District Press Club Tozammel Azam, Secretary Mahbub Chandu were present at the meeting.
The Deputy Commissioner said the matter has been brought to the notice of State Minister for Establishment and Member of Parliament for Meherpur-2 Farhad Hossain, higher authorities of social services and Divisional Commissioner. Action will be taken after receiving the investigation report.
“The probe body will check why and how the incident was taken place,” DC said.
Two journalists were attacked while went to collect news at Meherpur District Social Service Office on Sunday (November 8) noon.
The victim journalists were Abu Akter Karan, Meherpur district correspondent of television channel DBC and Zakir Hossain, district correspondent of online portal Bangladesh Reuters.
Journalist Abu Akter Karan alleged that when they went to the office around 2: pm, the officer was in the office. However, the room was closed from the inside. When he heard the reporter coming, he left the room and started arguing. At one stage, the journalists were taken to a room and locked up.
Later, several people including DD Abdul Quader, Probation Officer Sajjad Hossain and Abdul Quader’s private driver Milon beat them in the room and vandalized the camera, Karan said.
Upon receiving the news, other journalists of Meherpur went with a police team and rescued the two journalists.
A case has been filed with Meherpur Sadar Police Station accusing Deputy Director Abdul Quader, Probation Officer Sajjad Hossain, driver Milon Sheikh and several others.
